Unlocked Android smartphone: how to choose the right model for your needs

Buying an unlocked Android smartphone gives you the freedom to choose your mobile network in France and avoid restrictions associated with certain tariffs. However, navigating the vast range of options can be challenging, as technical specifications do not always tell the whole story. A high advertised memory capacity, a camera with a large number of megapixels or a waterproof rating alone is no guarantee of an experience suited to your needs.

Here are the key criteria to consider before buying, along with a selection of Android phones for different types of user.

Common pitfalls when buying

1. Confusing actual RAM with virtual memory expansion

Some models advertise 16 GB of RAM, even though this figure combines physical RAM with virtual memory expansion that uses part of the internal storage. This feature can help some apps stay open in the background, but it is not a substitute for 16 GB of physical RAM.

To compare two devices, check the following separately:

  • the amount of physical RAM actually installed, such as 4 GB, 6 GB or 8 GB;
  • the internal storage capacity, such as 64 GB, 128 GB or 256 GB;
  • whether there is a microSD or TF card slot;
  • whether apps can actually be installed on the memory card.

2. Treating megapixels as a complete measure of camera quality

A smartphone with a 32 MP camera can produce detailed images in good lighting. However, the result also depends on the image processing software, lens quality, aperture and stabilisation. Megapixel count alone therefore cannot tell you how well a phone will perform for night photography or video quality.

Also look at the front camera’s resolution, the available features and how you actually plan to use the phone: video calls, scanning documents, travel photography or posting on social media.

3. Interpreting an IP rating too broadly

IP ratings do not all provide the same level of protection. An IP54 phone offers limited protection against dust and everyday splashes, but it is not designed to be submerged. IP68 or IP69K ratings found on some rugged phones indicate a higher level of protection, under the conditions specified by the manufacturer.

This resistance may decrease after a fall, repair or wear to the seals. A phone with a 5000 mAh battery and an IP54 rating is therefore not necessarily designed for water-based activities.

Specifications to check before ordering

Network, SIM card and compatibility in France

An unlocked device must support the frequency bands used by your network provider. For everyday use, check compatibility with 4G LTE and the bands used in France. A 4G dual-SIM smartphone can be useful for keeping your personal and work numbers separate, or for using a local SIM card when travelling.

For a 5G model, also check:

  • the supported 5G bands;
  • compatibility with your tariff;
  • the accepted SIM card format;
  • whether there is a microSD slot, as some devices use a hybrid slot.

Battery life and charging

The mAh capacity provides an initial indication, but battery life depends heavily on screen brightness, network quality, GPS, gaming and video playback. An extra-long battery life smartphone designed for travelling may feature a 5000 mAh battery or more. The OPPO A6 Pro 5G featured below offers 6500 mAh, while the Blackview FORT 1 boasts 10000 mAh.

Also remember to check the charging power, whether a charger is included in the box and the safety instructions for the built-in lithium-ion battery.

Storage and display

For studying, web browsing and communication apps, a smartphone with 128 GB storage provides a comfortable starting point. Those who store a lot of videos, games or documents may be better off choosing 256 GB, as found on some models in this selection.

The display size and technology also play an important role. A 120 Hz AMOLED panel is designed for different uses than a large HD+ IPS screen. Before making your decision, compare the resolution, refresh rate, weight and thickness rather than focusing on just one specification.

Unlocked Android smartphone FAQ

How can I check whether an Android smartphone is compatible with my network provider ?

Check the 4G LTE or 5G bands listed in the technical specifications, then compare them with those used by your network provider. Also check the SIM card format and the terms of your tariff. “Unlocked” primarily means that the device is not restricted to a particular network provider. It does not guarantee compatibility with every frequency.

What storage capacity should I choose ?

For calls, messaging, browsing and a few apps, 64 GB may be enough if the device supports a memory card. 128 GB gives you more room for photos and videos. Those who download a lot of content or games may prefer 256 GB or 512 GB, having first checked whether a microSD slot is unavailable.

How much does it cost to use an unlocked Android smartphone ?

Your budget is not limited to the price of the phone. You also need to factor in your mobile tariff, a possible screen protector, charger replacement and the electricity used when charging. A model with a high-capacity battery may reduce how often you need to recharge from the mains, but actual battery life always depends on the network, screen and apps you use.
